Transcarpathian Regional Museum of Art named after Bokshay is one of cultural and art centers in Transcarpathian region. It was named after Ukrainian painter – Joseph Bokshay (1891-1975). A prerequisite for foundation of the museum was in June 1945, when several rooms in Uzhgorod castle were given to for the exposition of former Zemska Art Gallery. They opened for fans of fine arts in November 1948. For years the museum exposition enriched of exhibits from private collections and museums of Moscow, St. Petersburg, Kyiv, Kharkiv, Odesa, Lviv. In spring of 1979 the museum moved to historical centre of Uzhgorod, to the building of former zhupanat which was a monument of architecture of 1809. It located there till now. For the outstanding achievements in promoting fine art in the region in 1990 the museum is named after coryphaeus of Transcarpathian school of painting – People’s Artist of the USSR (1963), Corresponding Member of the USSR Academy of Arts (1958) Joseph Bokshay. Today there are more than 9,000 exhibits in the museum. There you can find paintings, drawings, sculptures and decorative arts.
