Uzhgorod Holy Cross Greek Catholic Cathedral began to be built in 1640 by Count Janos Drugets. Cathedral served as a temple for the Jesuit monastery that was in the house of the bishop’s residence. On April 1, 1770 the general vicar Andrii Bachynskyi (1732-1809) on an audience with the Empress Maria Theresa succeeded independence for Mukachevo Eparchy. In 1773 Pope Clement XIV abolished the Jesuit Order, and in 1775 the Austrian empress Maria Theresa issued a charter under which the structure of Jesuit monastery and temple were handed to Mukachevo Greek Catholic eparchy which at that time was headed by Bishop Bachynskyi. The temple was rebuilt in accordance with the requirements of the Eastern rite, and also the chapel of the Assumption of the Virgin was constructed. Today it is the main Greek Catholic Cathedral in Uzhgorod and residence of the Bishops of Mukachevo. The temple is dedicated to Exaltation of the Cross.
